Las Coloradas Pink Lakes Guide

Witness Nature's Palette: The Pink Lakes of Las Coloradas Guide

Prepare to be mesmerized by the surreal beauty of Las Coloradas, a collection of vibrant pink lakes located near the small fishing village of Río Lagartos on the Yucatán Peninsula. These otherworldly lagoons are a photographer's dream and a truly unique natural wonder. The intense pink hues are caused by high salt concentration, combined with the presence of red algae, plankton, and brine shrimp. It's a visual spectacle unlike anything you've ever seen. The history of Las Coloradas is intertwined with the local salt industry. For centuries, the area has been used for salt production, and the pink lakes are a byproduct of this process. The shallow waters and abundant sunshine create the perfect conditions for salt evaporation, leaving behind concentrated brine that supports the growth of the colorful microorganisms responsible for the pink coloration. While the area is now a popular tourist destination, salt production continues to be an important part of the local economy. Visitors to Las Coloradas can enjoy guided tours that explain the science behind the pink color and the history of salt production. While swimming in the lakes is generally prohibited to protect the delicate ecosystem, you can capture stunning photographs, observe the local wildlife (including flamingos!), and learn about the salt harvesting process. Many tours also include a visit to the nearby Río Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, a haven for birds and other wildlife. The best time to visit is during the dry season (December to April) when the colors are most vibrant.
