Puerto Morelos Lighthouse Guide
Standing Tall: The Resilient Symbol of Puerto Morelos Guide
Welcome to the iconic Puerto Morelos Lighthouse, a beacon of hope and resilience that stands as a symbol of this charming coastal town. More than just a navigational aid, the lighthouse represents the spirit of Puerto Morelos, having been rebuilt after the devastating Hurricane Beulah in 1967. Its presence is a constant reminder of the community's strength and determination. The original lighthouse played a crucial role in guiding ships through the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest reef system in the world. After Hurricane Beulah destroyed the original structure, the community rallied to rebuild it, creating the landmark you see today. While the lighthouse itself is not accessible to climb, it serves as a picturesque backdrop for photos and a focal point for the town square. Visitors can enjoy strolling along the beach, taking photos with the lighthouse, and exploring the nearby town square. The area is perfect for relaxing, enjoying the sea breeze, and soaking in the laid-back atmosphere of Puerto Morelos. The town also boasts a variety of excellent seafood restaurants, offering fresh catches of the day prepared with local flavors. Be sure to try the ceviche or grilled fish tacos for a true taste of the region.
Transportation
The easiest way to reach the Puerto Morelos Lighthouse is by taxi or colectivo (shared van) from Cancun or Playa del Carmen. Colectivos are a more affordable option and run frequently along Highway 307. Simply ask the driver to drop you off in Puerto Morelos. From there, the lighthouse is a short walk towards the beach from the main square.
