Tlachihualtepetl: Unearth Mexico's Hidden Giant Guide

Discover the Great Pyramid of Cholula, also known as Tlachihualtepetl ("artificial mountain" in Nahuatl), an ancient Mesoamerican pyramid complex located in Cholula, Puebla, Mexico. What appears to be a natural hill is actually the base of the largest pyramid by volume in the world, even larger than the Great Pyramid of Giza. This fascinating site offers a unique glimpse into the rich history and culture of pre-Columbian Mexico. The Great Pyramid of Cholula has a long and complex history, spanning several centuries and cultures. Construction began around the 3rd century BC and continued through the 8th century AD. Different groups, including the Olmec-Xicalanca and later the Tolteca-Chichimeca, contributed to its construction, each adding their own architectural styles and religious beliefs. The pyramid was dedicated to the deity Quetzalcoatl. After the Spanish conquest, the pyramid was deliberately hidden, and a church, Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, was built on top, symbolizing the triumph of Christianity over indigenous religions. Visitors to the Great Pyramid of Cholula can explore the extensive network of tunnels excavated within the pyramid, offering a glimpse into its various construction phases. You can also visit the Museo de Sitio de Cholula, which displays artifacts found during the excavations. Climbing to the top of the pyramid, where the church stands, provides panoramic views of the surrounding city and the Popocatépetl volcano. Cholula is also known for its delicious cuisine, including *mole poblano*, a rich and complex sauce made with chili peppers, chocolate, and spices, and *chiles en nogada*, poblano peppers stuffed with a mixture of fruits and meats, covered in a walnut cream sauce and pomegranate seeds.
