El Corchito Ecological Reserve Guide

El Corchito: A Hidden Oasis of Cenotes Guide

Escape the heat and discover the natural beauty of El Corchito Ecological Reserve, a hidden gem just outside Progreso. This protected area is home to several stunning cenotes (sinkholes), lush vegetation, and diverse wildlife. It's a perfect day trip for nature lovers and those seeking a refreshing swim in crystal-clear waters. El Corchito's cenotes were formed over thousands of years by the collapse of limestone bedrock, revealing underground freshwater springs. These cenotes were historically used by the Mayan people as sources of fresh water and for ceremonial purposes. Today, they are carefully preserved and open to the public for swimming and exploration. The reserve is also home to various species of birds, reptiles, and mammals, making it a haven for biodiversity. Visitors can explore the reserve via wooden walkways that wind through the jungle. Take a refreshing dip in the cenotes – bring your swimsuit! Look out for the friendly coatis (raccoon-like animals) that roam the area. You can also rent a life jacket for added safety. Remember to bring insect repellent, as mosquitoes can be present.
