Tortugranja: A Sea Turtle Sanctuary on Isla Mujeres Guide

This sanctuary is dedicated to the conservation and protection of sea turtles, offering visitors a unique opportunity to learn about these magnificent creatures and witness their life cycle. It's an educational and heartwarming experience for all ages. Tortugranja was established in 1987 by a local fisherman who was concerned about the declining sea turtle population. He began collecting turtle eggs from the beaches and incubating them in a safe environment. Today, Tortugranja continues this vital work, releasing thousands of baby turtles into the ocean each year. The sanctuary plays a crucial role in preserving these endangered species. At Tortugranja, you can observe sea turtles of all sizes, from tiny hatchlings to large adults. Learn about the different species of sea turtles found in the region and the threats they face. You can also participate in feeding the turtles and learn about their diet and behavior. The sanctuary also features exhibits on marine conservation and the importance of protecting our oceans. While there are no specific culinary traditions associated with Tortugranja, supporting the local economy by purchasing souvenirs helps contribute to the sanctuary's conservation efforts.
