Punta Sur Guide

Where Mexico First Greets the Sun: Explore Punta Sur Guide

Discover the breathtaking beauty and historical significance of Punta Sur, the southernmost point of Isla Mujeres. This dramatic cliffside location offers stunning panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea, ancient Mayan ruins, and a modern sculpture park. It's a must-visit destination for anyone seeking natural beauty, cultural immersion, and unforgettable photo opportunities. Punta Sur holds both natural and historical importance. It's the easternmost point in Mexico, making it the first place in the country to greet the sunrise each day. The site also houses the ruins of a Mayan temple dedicated to Ixchel, the goddess of the moon, fertility, and medicine. The Mayans believed that Isla Mujeres was sacred to Ixchel, and Punta Sur was a significant ceremonial site. Over time, the temple was damaged by hurricanes and erosion, but the remaining ruins still offer a glimpse into the island's ancient past. At Punta Sur, you can explore the Mayan ruins, wander through the contemporary sculpture park featuring works by Mexican and international artists, and simply soak in the incredible views. The Garrafon Natural Reef Park is nearby, offering snorkeling, kayaking, and other water activities. While Punta Sur itself doesn't have specific culinary offerings, you can find restaurants and food stalls in the nearby Garrafon area serving fresh seafood and Mexican snacks.

Transportation

Reaching Punta Sur is best done by golf cart or taxi. From the ferry terminal or downtown Isla Mujeres, a golf cart ride will take approximately 20-30 minutes. Taxis are also readily available. The road to Punta Sur is paved and well-maintained, making it easily accessible.
