Isla Mujeres Underwater Museum Guide
Dive into Art: Explore the Underwater Wonders of MUSA Guide
The Isla Mujeres Underwater Museum (MUSA) is a truly unique and unforgettable experience for art lovers and diving enthusiasts alike. Located off the coast of Isla Mujeres, Mexico, MUSA is a collection of over 500 permanent life-size sculptures submerged beneath the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea. This artificial reef project was designed to promote coral growth and provide a habitat for marine life, while also offering a stunning and thought-provoking art experience. Whether you're a seasoned diver or a first-time snorkeler, MUSA offers something for everyone. The museum was conceived in 2009 by British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor and Roberto Díaz Abraham, then President of the Cancun Nautical Association, with the goal of diverting tourists away from natural reefs, giving them a chance to recover. The sculptures are made from marine-grade cement, designed to encourage coral colonization and provide shelter for fish and other marine creatures. Over time, the sculptures have transformed into vibrant artificial reefs, teeming with life and color. The project has been a resounding success, attracting visitors from around the world and contributing to the conservation of the Mesoamerican Reef. Visitors can experience MUSA through snorkeling, scuba diving, or glass-bottom boat tours. Divers can explore the deeper galleries, encountering sculptures like "The Silent Evolution," a collection of life-size figures representing the evolution of humanity, and "The Banker," a figure buried up to his neck in sand. Snorkelers can enjoy the shallower galleries, observing the sculptures and the colorful marine life that now calls them home. Many tour operators offer packages that include transportation, equipment rental, and guided tours. While on Isla Mujeres, be sure to sample the local cuisine, including fresh seafood dishes like Tikin Xic (Yucatan-style grilled fish marinated in achiote paste) and ceviche.
Transportation
To reach MUSA, you'll first need to get to Isla Mujeres. Ferries depart regularly from Puerto Juarez, Gran Puerto, and Playa Tortugas in Cancun. Once on Isla Mujeres, you can book a snorkeling or diving tour with a local operator. Most tours include boat transportation to the museum site, which is located near Manchones Reef.
