Hierve el Agua, meaning "the water boils" in Spanish, is a stunning natural rock formation in Oaxaca, Mexico, that resembles a petrified waterfall. These cascading cliffs are not actually waterfalls of water, but rather mineral deposits formed over thousands of years by the runoff of spring water rich in calcium carbonate. The site offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountains, making it a must-see destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers. The formation of Hierve el Agua began millions of years ago when mineral-rich spring water bubbled to the surface. As the water flowed over the cliff edges, the calcium carbonate dissolved in the water precipitated out, gradually building up the travertine formations that we see today. The two main "waterfalls," known as the "cascada chica" (small waterfall) and the "cascada grande" (large waterfall), are the most prominent features. Indigenous Zapotec people have long considered the area sacred, and evidence suggests that they used the mineral springs for irrigation and possibly medicinal purposes. Transportation
Getting to Hierve el Agua can be an adventure in itself. The most common way is to take a colectivo (shared taxi) from Oaxaca City to Mitla. From Mitla, you can hire a taxi or take another colectivo to Hierve el Agua. Be prepared for a bumpy ride on a dirt road for the last leg of the journey. Alternatively, you can book a guided tour from Oaxaca City, which typically includes transportation and a knowledgeable guide.
