Ethnobotanical Garden of Oaxaca Guide
Discover Oaxaca's Living Library: The Ethnobotanical Garden Guide
Step into a world of botanical wonder at the Ethnobotanical Garden of Oaxaca, a stunning oasis showcasing the incredible diversity of plant life found in the state. More than just a garden, it's a living museum, highlighting the intricate relationship between plants and the cultures of Oaxaca. Prepare to be amazed by the unique adaptations of desert cacti, the vibrant colors of tropical flowers, and the sheer variety of species, all within the walls of a former monastery. The garden's history is intertwined with the story of the Ex-Convento de Santo Domingo, a magnificent 16th-century Dominican monastery. For centuries, the monastery served as a center of religious and cultural life. In the 1990s, the space was transformed into the Ethnobotanical Garden, a project spearheaded by renowned Oaxacan artist Francisco Toledo. The garden's design reflects the diverse ecosystems of Oaxaca, from the arid highlands to the humid rainforests. Visitors can explore the garden on guided tours, offered in Spanish and English, which delve into the cultural significance of the plants. Learn about traditional medicinal uses, the role of plants in Oaxacan cuisine, and the symbolism embedded in indigenous art. The garden also hosts workshops and events throughout the year, offering opportunities to learn about botany, horticulture, and Oaxacan culture. Don't miss the chance to wander through this captivating space and connect with the natural heritage of Oaxaca.
