27 Steps Structure Guide
Ascend to History: The Majestic 27 Steps Structure Guide
Prepare to be awestruck by the 27 Steps Structure, one of Kohunlich's most iconic and impressive monuments. This towering pyramid, adorned with colossal stucco masks, offers a captivating glimpse into the religious beliefs and artistic prowess of the ancient Maya. Its imposing presence and intricate details make it a must-see for any visitor to Kohunlich. The 27 Steps Structure, also known as the Temple of the Masks, dates back to the Late Classic period (600-900 AD). Its most striking feature is the series of large, well-preserved stucco masks that adorn its facade. These masks, depicting the Mayan sun god Kinich Ahau, are believed to have played a crucial role in religious ceremonies and rituals. The structure's design and ornamentation reflect the Maya's deep understanding of astronomy, mathematics, and art. Visitors can marvel at the intricate details of the stucco masks, climb the steps (partially restored for access), and imagine the elaborate ceremonies that once took place here. The view from the top offers a panoramic perspective of the surrounding jungle and the Great Plaza. While climbing, be mindful of the steps, as some may be uneven. The site offers a unique opportunity to connect with the spiritual and artistic legacy of the Mayan civilization. Remember to bring water and wear comfortable shoes for exploring the structure and surrounding area.
