Kabah: Explore the Palace of Masks in the Puuc Region Guide
Discover the wonders of Kabah, a significant Maya archaeological site located in the Puuc region of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Kabah, meaning "strong hand," was a prominent city during the Classic period and is renowned for its impressive architecture and intricate stone carvings. As part of the Ruta Puuc, Kabah offers a fascinating glimpse into the Maya civilization and its artistic achievements. Prepare to be amazed by the Palace of Masks, a stunning structure adorned with hundreds of Chaac masks, the Maya rain god. Kabah's history dates back to the Preclassic period, but it reached its peak during the Late Classic period (around 600-900 AD). The city was connected to Uxmal by a raised causeway, known as a sacbé, indicating a close relationship between the two centers. Kabah's architecture is characterized by the Puuc style, featuring finely cut stone facades, intricate mosaics, and elaborate carvings. The Palace of Masks is the most iconic structure at Kabah, showcasing the Maya's mastery of stone carving and their reverence for the rain god. Visitors to Kabah can explore the Palace of Masks, marveling at the intricate details of the Chaac masks. Wander through the other structures, including the Great Temple and the Codz Poop, a building with a unique frieze depicting various scenes. Climb to the top of the structures for panoramic views of the surrounding jungle. While Kabah itself doesn't have specific culinary traditions, the nearby town of Santa Elena and other towns along the Ruta Puuc offer opportunities to sample traditional Yucatecan cuisine.
