Punta Sur Guide
Where Mexico First Greets the Sun: Explore Punta Sur Guide
Welcome to Punta Sur, the southernmost tip of Isla Mujeres and the easternmost point in Mexico! This breathtaking location offers a unique blend of natural beauty, ancient Mayan history, and stunning panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea. Prepare to be captivated by the dramatic cliffs, crashing waves, and the vibrant energy of this special place. It's a must-see for any visitor to Isla Mujeres. Punta Sur is home to the ruins of a Mayan temple dedicated to Ixchel, the goddess of the moon, fertility, and medicine. The temple dates back to around 600 AD, and while much of it has been weathered by time and the elements, its presence adds a profound sense of history and spirituality to the site. The area was considered a sacred place by the Mayans, and you can still feel the energy of their ancient rituals as you explore the grounds. The modern sculpture park adds another layer of artistic expression to the landscape. Visitors can explore the Mayan ruins, wander through the vibrant sculpture park featuring contemporary Mexican art, and simply soak in the incredible views from the cliffside. Don't forget your camera! The photo opportunities are endless. You can also enjoy the small shops and restaurants located near the entrance, offering souvenirs and refreshments. While there, be sure to try some fresh seafood, a staple of Isla Mujeres cuisine. The local ceviche is a particularly popular choice, made with fresh fish, lime juice, and spices.
Transportation
The easiest way to reach Punta Sur is by taxi or golf cart, the primary modes of transportation on Isla Mujeres. There are also public buses that run along the main road, but they may not drop you directly at the entrance to Punta Sur, requiring a short walk.
