Cuzama Cenotes Guide

Cuzama Cenotes: An Underground Adventure into Mayan Sacred Waters Guide

Embark on an unforgettable adventure to the Cuzama Cenotes, a collection of stunning underground sinkholes located near the town of Cuzama. These cenotes, formed by the collapse of limestone bedrock, offer a unique opportunity to swim in crystal-clear waters and explore the mystical beauty of the Mayan underworld. Prepare for a thrilling ride on a horse-drawn cart as you journey through the jungle to reach these hidden gems. Cenotes held a significant place in Mayan culture, serving as sources of fresh water and sacred sites for rituals and ceremonies. The Cuzama Cenotes, like many others in the Yucatan Peninsula, were believed to be gateways to the underworld, known as Xibalba. Today, these cenotes are preserved as natural wonders, allowing visitors to experience the beauty and mystery that captivated the ancient Mayans. The adventure begins with a ride on a 'truck' (a small platform pulled by a horse) along old railway tracks through the jungle. This unique mode of transportation adds to the excitement and immerses you in the natural surroundings. You'll visit three distinct cenotes: Chelentun, Chak-Zinik-Che, and Bolon-Chohol. Each cenote boasts its own unique characteristics, from the size and shape of the cavern to the color and clarity of the water. Swim, snorkel, and marvel at the stalactites and stalagmites that adorn these subterranean wonders. While Cuzama is a small town, you can find traditional Yucatecan food in nearby restaurants. Look for simple, home-style meals featuring local ingredients.

Transportation

The most common way to reach Cuzama Cenotes is by taking a colectivo (shared van) from Merida. Colectivos depart from the Noreste terminal on Calle 67 between Calles 50 and 52. Ask for a colectivo to Cuzama. From Cuzama, you can hire a mototaxi to take you to the cenotes. Alternatively, you can hire a taxi directly from Merida, but this will be more expensive.
