El Rey Ruins Guide
Step Back in Time: Explore Ancient Mayan History in Cancun Guide
Escape the bustling hotel zone and discover a piece of ancient Mayan history at El Rey Ruins, located right in the heart of Cancun. This archaeological site offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the remnants of a Mayan settlement that thrived centuries ago. It's a fascinating contrast to the modern city surrounding it. El Rey, meaning "The King" in Spanish, was likely a significant trading and ceremonial center during the Late Postclassic period (around 1200-1550 AD). The site consists of 47 structures, including temples, platforms, and residences, arranged around two main plazas. While the exact history of El Rey is still being researched, it's believed to have been abandoned shortly after the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors. Visitors can explore the ruins on foot, wandering among the ancient structures and imagining life in this Mayan settlement. Informational signs provide insights into the history and significance of the site. Keep an eye out for the many iguanas that call El Rey home – they are a common sight basking in the sun on the ancient stones. The site is relatively small, making it easy to explore in an hour or two.
