Calakmul Archaeological Site Guide
Calakmul: Ascend to the Ancient Mayan Kingdom in the Jungle Guide
Prepare to be awestruck by Calakmul, one of the largest and most powerful ancient Mayan cities, now a UNESCO World Heritage site hidden deep within the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve. This sprawling metropolis once rivaled Tikal in size and influence, and its towering pyramids offer breathtaking views of the surrounding jungle. Exploring Calakmul is an unforgettable journey into the heart of Mayan civilization. Calakmul's history stretches back over two millennia, reaching its peak during the Classic period (250-900 AD). The city was the capital of the powerful Kaan dynasty, also known as the Snake Kingdom, which controlled a vast territory and engaged in fierce rivalries with other Mayan city-states. The site's name, meaning "Two Adjacent Mounds" in Mayan, refers to the two prominent pyramids that dominate the landscape. Climb the towering Pyramid II, one of the tallest Mayan structures, for unparalleled views of the jungle canopy. Explore the Great Plaza, the heart of the ancient city, and imagine the bustling activity that once took place here. Discover intricate stelae (stone monuments) that depict the rulers and history of Calakmul. While there are no restaurants within the archaeological site, pack a picnic to enjoy amidst the ancient ruins. Remember to bring plenty of water and sunscreen, as the jungle can be hot and humid.
Transportation
Reaching Calakmul Archaeological Site requires a bit of planning. First, you'll need to get to Xpujil, the nearest town with lodging and services. From Xpujil, take Highway 186 towards Chetumal. After about 60 km, turn south onto the signed road leading to Calakmul. This road is partially paved and can be rough in places, so a vehicle with good clearance is recommended. The drive from the highway turnoff to the entrance of the reserve is approximately 60 km and takes about 2 hours. From the reserve entrance, it's another 20 km to the archaeological site itself. Consider hiring a driver in Xpujil who is familiar with the road conditions and can provide transportation to and from the site.
