Becan Archaeological Site Guide
Becan: The Walled City - A Fortress of Maya Power Guide
Uncover the secrets of Becan, a unique and historically significant Maya archaeological site distinguished by its impressive defensive walls. Unlike most Maya cities, Becan was heavily fortified, suggesting a turbulent past and a strategic importance in the region. Explore the towering pyramids, intricate palaces, and the remnants of its formidable walls, and imagine life within this ancient Maya stronghold. Becan's history stretches back to the Preclassic period (600 BC - 250 AD), making it one of the oldest Maya cities in the region. However, it reached its peak during the Classic period (250-900 AD). The most distinctive feature of Becan is its surrounding moat and defensive walls, which are believed to have been constructed around 600 AD. These fortifications suggest that Becan was a powerful and potentially contested city, possibly involved in regional conflicts. The name "Becan" translates to "Road of the Serpent" or "Left Water" in Maya, hinting at the site's geographical location and possible religious significance. Exploring Becan is an adventure into the past. The main activity is climbing the pyramids, exploring the palaces, and walking along the remnants of the defensive walls. The views from the top of the pyramids are spectacular, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding jungle. Be sure to visit the central plaza, which is surrounded by several important structures. While there are no specific culinary traditions directly associated with the site itself, nearby towns offer opportunities to sample regional Yucatecan cuisine, such as relleno negro (turkey in black sauce) and queso relleno (stuffed cheese).
