Volcanic Views: Gaze into the Heart of Trou aux Cerfs Guide

Prepare to be amazed by the natural wonder of Trou aux Cerfs, a dormant volcano located in the heart of Curepipe. This iconic landmark offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the city of Curepipe, the central plateau, and on a clear day, even the coastline. Stand at the crater's edge and contemplate the geological forces that shaped this unique feature of Mauritius. It's a must-see for any visitor to the island. Trou aux Cerfs, meaning "hole of the deer," is estimated to be around two million years old. While it's considered dormant, scientists believe it could potentially become active again in the distant future. The crater itself is approximately 350 meters in diameter and 85 meters deep. Over time, the crater has become covered in lush vegetation, creating a striking contrast between the green foliage and the volcanic rock. Visitors can walk along the paved path that circles the rim of the crater, enjoying the stunning views from all angles. There are several viewpoints along the way, providing excellent photo opportunities. For the more adventurous, there's a jogging track around the crater, offering a unique and scenic workout. While there are no specific culinary traditions directly associated with Trou aux Cerfs, Curepipe offers a variety of restaurants and cafes where you can sample local Mauritian cuisine after your visit. Consider trying a "dholl puri" from a local street vendor for a quick and tasty snack.
