This lush oasis offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea and the Pitons du Carbet mountains. Whether you're a seasoned botanist or simply seeking a tranquil escape, Jardin de Balata is a must-see destination. Created by horticulturist Jean-Philippe Thoze, Jardin de Balata is a testament to his passion for plants and his artistic vision. The garden was established in 1982 on the site of his grandmother's Creole house and has since grown into a world-renowned botanical treasure. Thoze's design incorporates elements of both formal French gardens and the natural beauty of the surrounding rainforest, creating a harmonious blend of cultivated and wild landscapes. The garden is home to an impressive collection of bromeliads, orchids, heliconias, and other tropical species, showcasing the incredible biodiversity of Martinique. A visit to Jardin de Balata offers a variety of activities for nature lovers. Stroll along the winding paths, admiring the vibrant colors and fragrant scents of the flowers. Climb the suspended rope bridges for a unique perspective of the garden and the surrounding landscape (not for the faint of heart!). Relax on one of the many benches and soak in the tranquility of the surroundings. While there are no specific culinary offerings within the garden itself, you can find delicious Creole cuisine in nearby Schoelcher. Consider trying a local restaurant for lunch or dinner after your visit to Jardin de Balata.
