Savane des Pétrifications Guide
Savane des Pétrifications: Walk on a Volcanic Moonscape Guide
Prepare to be transported to another world at the Savane des Pétrifications, a unique and otherworldly landscape located near Sainte-Anne, Martinique. This "petrified savanna" is a geological marvel, a stark and beautiful expanse of volcanic rock and fossilized wood, shaped by centuries of erosion and volcanic activity. It's a place of stark beauty, offering breathtaking views of the coastline and a fascinating glimpse into the island's geological past. The Savane des Pétrifications owes its existence to the volcanic activity that shaped Martinique. Over time, volcanic ash and lava flows covered the area, burying trees and other organic matter. Through a process called petrification, the organic material was gradually replaced by minerals, turning the wood into stone. The resulting landscape is a surreal mix of barren rock formations, fossilized wood fragments, and sparse vegetation, creating an almost lunar-like environment. A visit to the Savane des Pétrifications is an unforgettable experience. Follow the marked hiking trails that wind through the savanna, taking in the stunning views and marveling at the unique geological formations. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water, as the terrain can be uneven and the sun can be intense. The hike to the coast offers spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. After your hike, relax on one of the nearby beaches, such as Anse Trabaud, and enjoy the crystal-clear waters and soft sand. For a taste of local cuisine, head back to Sainte-Anne and sample some of the island's delicious Creole dishes.
