La Savane des Esclaves Guide

A Journey Through Martinique's History: La Savane des Esclaves Guide

La Savane des Esclaves (The Savannah of Slaves) is a poignant and powerful open-air museum in Martinique dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of slavery on the island. This immersive experience offers visitors a profound understanding of the lives, struggles, and resilience of the enslaved people who shaped Martinique's culture and heritage. It's a deeply moving and educational journey through a dark chapter of history. Founded by Gilbert Larose, La Savane des Esclaves is not a historical site in its original form, but rather a reconstruction and memorial. Larose, driven by a desire to honor his ancestors and educate future generations, meticulously researched and recreated a traditional slave village. The site features authentic dwellings, tools, and artifacts that depict the daily lives of enslaved people, from their living conditions to their agricultural practices. It serves as a powerful reminder of the brutality and injustice of slavery. Visitors can explore the reconstructed slave village, including the traditional huts, gardens, and workshops. Guided tours provide in-depth information about the history of slavery in Martinique, the transatlantic slave trade, and the resistance movements led by enslaved people. The site also features a medicinal garden showcasing the plants used by enslaved people for healing and survival. It's an opportunity to reflect on the past and learn about the enduring legacy of slavery. The site also includes a Creole house, showcasing the architecture and lifestyle of the period.
