Diamond Beach Guide
Diamond Beach: Sun, Sand, and the Iconic Diamond Rock Guide
Diamond Beach (Plage du Diamant) is a stunning stretch of dark volcanic sand located in Le Diamant, Martinique. Its name comes from the iconic Diamond Rock (Rocher du Diamant), a dramatic basalt island just offshore that dominates the horizon. This beach is a must-visit for anyone seeking relaxation, breathtaking scenery, and a touch of history. The contrast of the dark sand against the turquoise water and the imposing Diamond Rock creates a truly unforgettable visual experience. Diamond Rock played a crucial role in the Anglo-French wars of the early 19th century. The British, recognizing its strategic importance, fortified the rock and used it as a naval vessel, HMS Diamond Rock, to harass French shipping. For over a year, the "ship" held out against French attacks before finally surrendering. Today, Diamond Rock stands as a silent monument to this historical conflict, a reminder of the island's complex past. Diamond Beach offers a variety of activities for visitors. Swimming is popular, although the currents can be strong, so exercise caution. Sunbathing on the dark sand is a relaxing way to soak up the Caribbean sun. Many visitors enjoy taking boat trips to Diamond Rock for snorkeling or diving, exploring the vibrant marine life that surrounds the island. After a day at the beach, indulge in the local culinary scene. Several restaurants and cafes along the beach offer fresh seafood and traditional Creole dishes, such as accras (salt cod fritters) and colombo (curry stew).
