Anse Couleuvre Beach Guide
Anse Couleuvre: Martinique's Hidden Black Sand Paradise Guide
Escape the crowds and discover the unspoiled beauty of Anse Couleuvre, a secluded black sand beach nestled on the northern tip of Martinique. This isn't your typical Caribbean postcard scene; it's a raw, natural haven where lush rainforest meets the dramatic coastline. Prepare to be captivated by the tranquility and the feeling of being worlds away from the everyday hustle. Anse Couleuvre's allure lies in its untouched state. There are no bustling beach bars or rows of sun loungers here. Instead, you'll find a pristine stretch of volcanic black sand, framed by towering cliffs draped in vibrant greenery. The beach is named after the "couleuvre," a type of non-venomous snake found in the area, adding to its wild and untamed character. While swimming is possible, be mindful of the currents, which can sometimes be strong. Beyond sunbathing and swimming, Anse Couleuvre is the starting point for the popular hike to Grand Rivière (Randonnée de l'Anse Couleuvre à Grand Rivière). This challenging but rewarding trail winds through the rainforest, offering breathtaking views of the coastline and the chance to spot local wildlife. After your adventure, pack a picnic to enjoy on the beach, or head to a local restaurant in a nearby village to sample authentic Martinican cuisine. Be sure to try the "Colombo," a flavorful curry dish, or fresh seafood grilled to perfection.
Transportation
Reaching Anse Couleuvre requires a bit of effort, adding to its secluded charm. The most common way is by car. From Saint-Pierre, follow the D10 towards Le Prêcheur. The road is winding and narrow in places, so drive carefully. Once you reach the end of the road, you'll find a parking area. From there, it's a short walk down a steep path to the beach. Alternatively, you can take a taxi from Saint-Pierre, but be sure to arrange a return trip in advance, as taxis are not readily available at Anse Couleuvre.
