Cokes Surf Camp Guide
Ride the Waves at Cokes: Surfing Paradise in the Maldives Guide
Cokes Surf Camp, located on the island of Thulusdhoo in the Maldives, is a haven for surfers of all skill levels. Known for its consistent and powerful right-hand break, Cokes is a world-renowned surf spot that attracts wave riders from across the globe. Whether you're a seasoned pro looking for a challenging barrel or a beginner eager to learn the basics, Cokes Surf Camp offers an unforgettable surfing experience in a tropical paradise. While Thulusdhoo doesn't have a long, documented history like some other Maldivian islands, its significance lies in its modern role as a hub for surfing and local island life. The island has embraced tourism while maintaining its authentic Maldivian culture. The surf break itself, "Cokes," gets its name from the nearby Coca-Cola factory, a unique landmark that adds to the island's charm. The island's development is intertwined with the growth of surfing tourism in the Maldives, making it a relatively recent but important part of the country's tourism landscape. At Cokes Surf Camp, you can participate in a variety of activities, including surfing lessons for beginners, guided surf trips to nearby breaks, and board rentals. Beyond surfing, Thulusdhoo offers opportunities for snorkeling, diving, fishing, and exploring the local culture. You can also indulge in delicious Maldivian cuisine at local restaurants, relax on the pristine beaches, or simply soak up the sun and enjoy the laid-back island vibe. While not directly related to the surf camp, be sure to try "Mas Huni," a traditional Maldivian breakfast dish made with shredded smoked tuna, coconut, and onions, often served with roshi (flatbread).
Transportation
The primary way to reach Thulusdhoo is by speedboat from Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malé. Speedboats operate regularly and the journey takes approximately 30-45 minutes. You can arrange speedboat transfers through your guesthouse or the surf camp itself. Alternatively, a local ferry is available, which is a more budget-friendly option but takes around 3 hours.
