Gunung Gading National Park Guide
Gunung Gading: Home of the Giant Rafflesia Guide
Venture into the heart of Borneo's rainforest at Gunung Gading National Park, a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers. This park is most famous for being one of the best places in the world to witness the blooming of the Rafflesia, the world's largest flower. But even when the Rafflesia isn't in bloom, Gunung Gading offers a rich tapestry of flora and fauna, stunning waterfalls, and challenging hiking trails. Gunung Gading was gazetted as a national park in 1983, primarily to protect the Rafflesia. The park's diverse ecosystem supports a wide range of plant and animal life, including various species of birds, monkeys, and other wildlife. The Rafflesia itself is a parasitic plant that can grow up to a meter in diameter. Its bloom is a rare and spectacular event, attracting visitors from around the globe. The blooming period is unpredictable and lasts only a few days, so checking with the park authorities before your visit is highly recommended. Beyond Rafflesia spotting, Gunung Gading offers a variety of activities. Hike through the lush rainforest to discover hidden waterfalls, such as the Seven Waterfall Trail, which leads you past a series of cascading falls. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the diverse avian population. Remember to wear appropriate hiking shoes and bring plenty of water. While there are no specific culinary traditions within the park itself, nearby Lundu town offers local Malay and Chinese cuisine. Try the fresh seafood and local delicacies for a taste of Sarawakian flavors.
