Atkinson Clock Tower Guide
A Timeless Landmark: Discover the History of Atkinson Clock Tower Guide
The Atkinson Clock Tower stands as a silent sentinel overlooking Kota Kinabalu, a poignant reminder of the city's past. This historical landmark is one of the oldest structures in Kota Kinabalu and offers a glimpse into the colonial era. While it may not be a grand, elaborate structure, its historical significance and the panoramic views it offers make it a worthwhile visit. The Atkinson Clock Tower was built in 1902 in memory of Francis George Atkinson, the District Officer of Jesselton (the former name of Kota Kinabalu), who died of malaria at the young age of 28. It was commissioned by his mother as a tribute to her son. The tower served not only as a memorial but also as a navigational aid for ships entering the harbor. Constructed entirely of wood, it has remarkably withstood the test of time and remains a significant historical landmark. While you can't climb inside the Atkinson Clock Tower, you can admire its architecture and learn about its history. Take photos of the tower against the backdrop of the city and the sea. The surrounding area offers excellent viewpoints for panoramic shots of Kota Kinabalu. A short walk uphill from the tower leads to Signal Hill Observatory Platform, providing even more stunning views.
Transportation
The Atkinson Clock Tower is located on Signal Hill Road and is easily accessible by taxi, Grab, or on foot from the city center. It's a relatively short but steep walk uphill. You can also take a bus heading towards Signal Hill, but walking is often the most convenient option.
