Clan Jetties Guide

Clan Jetties: A Living Heritage on the Waterfront Guide

Step back in time and experience the unique cultural heritage of the Clan Jetties, a series of wooden houses built on stilts extending into the sea. These historic settlements are home to Chinese clans who have lived and worked here for generations. Walking along the jetties offers a glimpse into a traditional way of life that has remained largely unchanged for over a century. The Clan Jetties were established in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as settlements for Chinese immigrants who came to Penang to work as laborers and fishermen. Each jetty is named after a different clan, and the residents share a common ancestry and cultural identity. The jetties were originally built without land ownership, allowing the clans to live and work without paying land taxes. Over time, they have become an integral part of George Town's cultural landscape. Visitors can stroll along the wooden walkways, observe the daily life of the residents, and admire the traditional architecture of the houses. Many of the homes have been converted into shops selling souvenirs, handicrafts, and local snacks. Chew Jetty is the most popular and tourist-friendly, offering a variety of food stalls and shops. Don't miss the opportunity to try some local Penang delicacies, such as Hokkien Mee, Char Kway Teow, and Assam Laksa, which are readily available in the surrounding area. The jetties offer a unique culinary experience, with some families selling homemade snacks and dishes passed down through generations.
