Rova of Antananarivo: A Royal Journey Through Malagasy History Guide

Perched atop Analamanga hill, the highest point in Antananarivo, the Rova of Antananarivo (Queen's Palace) stands as a powerful symbol of Malagasy royalty and national identity. This fortified royal complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a captivating journey through the history of the Merina Kingdom and its legacy. Prepare to be transported back in time as you explore the reconstructed palaces, tombs, and sacred grounds. The Rova's history dates back to the 17th century, serving as the royal residence for centuries. It reached its zenith under King Andrianampoinimerina in the late 18th century, who unified Madagascar and established Antananarivo as its capital. Subsequent monarchs, including Queen Ranavalona I, expanded and embellished the complex, adding grand palaces and imposing structures. Tragically, a devastating fire in 1995 destroyed much of the Rova, but painstaking restoration efforts have brought it back to life, allowing visitors to appreciate its former glory. Visitors can explore the reconstructed Queen's Palace (Manjakamiadana), a magnificent wooden structure with a distinctive silver-clad roof. Wander through the royal tombs, where the remains of Merina monarchs are interred. Visit the Tranovola, a wooden house that served as a royal residence and audience hall. The Rova also offers panoramic views of Antananarivo, providing a stunning backdrop for your historical exploration. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition directly tied to the Rova itself, Antananarivo offers a wide range of Malagasy cuisine. Look for restaurants serving 'romazava' (a hearty beef stew) or 'koba akondro' (a sweet rice cake wrapped in banana leaves).

Transportation

The Rova of Antananarivo is easily accessible by taxi from anywhere in the city. You can also take a local bus (taxi-be) to the Analakely market, which is located at the foot of Analamanga hill. From there, it's a steep but manageable walk uphill to the Rova. Be prepared for some steps! Negotiate the taxi fare beforehand.
