Declare Your Independence: Discover the Republic of Užupis Guide

Welcome to Užupis, a self-declared republic within Vilnius, known for its bohemian spirit, artistic flair, and quirky sense of humor. This unique district, separated from the rest of the city by the Vilnelė River, has its own constitution, president, and even an army (of 12). It's a place where creativity thrives and individuality is celebrated. Užupis, meaning "beyond the river," was historically one of the poorest districts of Vilnius. Over time, it attracted artists, intellectuals, and free spirits who transformed it into a haven for creativity. In 1997, Užupis declared its independence on April Fool's Day, solidifying its reputation as a playful and unconventional community. The Republic of Užupis has its own constitution, translated into numerous languages and displayed on a wall along Paupio Street. Explore the streets of Užupis and discover its art galleries, workshops, and cafes. Visit the Užupis Constitution Wall and read the articles, which include gems like "Everyone has the right to celebrate or not celebrate their birthday" and "Everyone has the right to be happy." Cross the bridge guarded by the Užupis Constitution Angel statue. Enjoy a coffee or a meal at one of the riverside cafes and soak in the bohemian atmosphere. Don't miss the chance to get your passport stamped at the Užupis Information Centre.
