In the 19th century, it flourished as a popular resort town, attracting visitors from across Europe. The town's most significant historical event was the discovery of the Juodkrante Treasure in 1860, a collection of over 400 amber artifacts dating back to the Neolithic period, showcasing the region's ancient connection to amber craftsmanship. Today, Juodkrante retains its historical charm with its quaint wooden architecture and peaceful ambiance. Juodkrante offers a variety of activities to suit every taste. Explore the Hill of Witches, a whimsical sculpture park featuring over 80 wooden carvings depicting characters from Lithuanian folklore. Wander through the Grey Heron and Cormorant Colony, a protected area where you can observe these fascinating birds in their natural habitat. Relax on the beach, swim in the Baltic Sea, or take a boat trip along the Curonian Lagoon. For a taste of local cuisine, be sure to try smoked fish, a regional specialty, and sample traditional Lithuanian dishes at one of the town's cozy restaurants.
