Perched atop a picturesque hill overlooking the Gauja River valley, the castle offers stunning views and a fascinating glimpse into Latvia's past. Explore the crumbling walls, imagine the bustling activity within its courtyards, and let your imagination transport you back to the Middle Ages. The castle's history dates back to the early 13th century when it was built by the Livonian Brothers of the Sword. It served as a strategic stronghold, protecting the region from invaders. Over the centuries, the castle changed hands and underwent numerous renovations and expansions. It played a significant role in various conflicts, including the Polish-Swedish War. Sadly, the castle was largely destroyed during the Great Northern War in the 18th century, leaving behind the evocative ruins we see today. Visitors can explore the castle grounds, climb the towers for panoramic views, and learn about the castle's history through informative displays. During the summer months, the castle hosts medieval festivals and reenactments, bringing the past to life. Nearby, you can find the Sigulda Bobsleigh and Luge Track, offering a thrilling experience.
