Buddha Park: A Surreal Sculpture Garden in Laos Guide
Xieng Khuan, also known as Buddha Park, is a fascinating and somewhat bizarre sculpture park located just outside of Vientiane. Created in 1958 by the monk Bounleua Sulilat, the park is filled with over 200 religious statues and sculptures representing Buddhist and Hindu deities, as well as figures from Laotian folklore. This unique and eccentric park offers a captivating glimpse into the mind of its creator and provides a memorable experience for visitors. Bounleua Sulilat was a spiritual leader who combined elements of Buddhism and Hinduism in his teachings. He created Xieng Khuan as a place where people could come to learn about and appreciate these different religions. The sculptures are made of concrete and are often quite large and imposing. The most iconic structure in the park is a giant pumpkin-shaped building with three levels representing hell, earth, and heaven. Explore the park's winding paths and discover the diverse collection of sculptures, including a reclining Buddha, a multi-armed Shiva, and various mythical creatures. Climb to the top of the pumpkin-shaped building for panoramic views of the park and the surrounding countryside. Take photos with the quirky and unusual sculptures. Transportation
The most common way to reach Xieng Khuan is by taking bus number 14 from the central bus station in Vientiane (Talat Sao). The bus ride takes approximately 45-60 minutes. Alternatively, you can hire a tuk-tuk or taxi for a more direct and comfortable journey. Negotiate the price beforehand.
