Pha That Luang Guide

The Great Sacred Stupa: A Symbol of Lao National Identity Guide

Visit Pha That Luang, the most important national monument in Laos and a powerful symbol of Lao identity. This magnificent golden stupa, located in Vientiane, is believed to enshrine a piece of Buddha's breastbone. Its shimmering gold exterior and impressive architecture make it a truly awe-inspiring sight. Pha That Luang is not only a religious site but also a cultural and historical landmark, attracting visitors from all over the world. The history of Pha That Luang dates back to the 3rd century AD when it was originally built as a Hindu temple. In the 13th century, it was converted into a Buddhist temple. The current structure was largely rebuilt in the 16th century during the reign of King Setthathirath, who moved the capital from Luang Prabang to Vientiane. The stupa has undergone several restorations over the centuries, most recently in the 1930s. It represents a blend of Lao, Thai, and Indian architectural styles. Visitors can explore the grounds of Pha That Luang, admiring the intricate details of the stupa and the surrounding temples. Take photos of the golden exterior, especially during sunrise or sunset when the light is most beautiful. Visit the nearby Wat Neua That Luang and Wat Tai That Luang temples. During the annual That Luang Festival, held in November, the grounds come alive with vibrant celebrations, including parades, religious ceremonies, and traditional performances. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition directly linked to Pha That Luang, you can find numerous restaurants and street food stalls in Vientiane offering delicious Lao cuisine.
