The caves are divided into two main sections: Tham Ting (the lower cave) and Tham Theung (the upper cave). Tourists can explore both caves, marveling at the sheer number and variety of Buddha images. You can hire a longtail boat from Luang Prabang to reach the caves, enjoying the scenic river journey. Once there, you can climb the steps to both Tham Ting and Tham Theung. Remember to dress respectfully (shoulders and knees covered) as this is a sacred site. While there are no specific culinary traditions directly associated with the caves, many restaurants in Luang Prabang offer traditional Lao cuisine, including sticky rice, laap (minced meat salad), and or lam (a flavorful vegetable stew).
Transportation
The most common way to reach Pak Ou Caves is by taking a longtail boat from Luang Prabang. Boats can be hired from the pier in Luang Prabang. The journey takes approximately 1-2 hours each way, offering stunning views of the Mekong River. Alternatively, you can hire a tuk-tuk or taxi to a village closer to the caves and then take a shorter boat ride.
