Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary Guide
A Haven for Giants: Witness Rhino Conservation in Action Guide
The Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, nestled within Tsavo West National Park in Kenya, offers a unique opportunity to witness the dedicated efforts to protect and conserve the endangered black rhino. This fenced sanctuary provides a safe haven for these magnificent creatures, allowing them to breed and thrive in a protected environment. A visit here is not just a safari; it's a chance to contribute to the survival of a species. The sanctuary was established in the late 1980s as rhino populations across Kenya plummeted due to poaching. Tsavo West National Park, with its vast size and diverse terrain, was identified as a suitable location for a rhino sanctuary. The sanctuary's creation involved clearing vegetation, constructing a perimeter fence, and relocating rhinos from other areas. Over the years, the sanctuary has played a vital role in increasing rhino numbers and combating poaching. Visitors to the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary can embark on guided game drives, often in the early morning or late afternoon when rhinos are most active. Knowledgeable rangers will share insights into rhino behavior, conservation challenges, and the sanctuary's ongoing efforts. While rhino sightings are never guaranteed, the sanctuary offers a significantly higher chance of encountering these elusive animals than in other parts of Tsavo. While there are no specific culinary traditions within the sanctuary itself, your lodge or camp in Tsavo will offer a variety of dining options.
