Thomson Falls, located near Nyahururu in Kenya, is a breathtaking waterfall that plunges 74 meters (243 feet) into a rugged gorge. This iconic landmark offers stunning views and a refreshing escape into nature. The falls are named after Joseph Thomson, a Scottish geologist and naturalist who was one of the first Europeans to reach the falls in 1883. The Ewaso Narok River feeds the falls, creating a powerful cascade that thunders into the pool below. The surrounding landscape is characterized by lush vegetation and rocky cliffs, providing a picturesque backdrop for this natural wonder. The area is also home to a variety of bird species, making it a popular spot for birdwatching enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the falls from the viewing platform located at the top. A nature trail leads down to the base of the falls, offering a closer perspective of the cascading water and the surrounding gorge (note that this trail can be challenging). Curio shops and local vendors selling souvenirs and crafts are located near the entrance. While not directly related to the falls, Nyahururu town offers opportunities to sample local Kenyan cuisine.
Transportation
From Nakuru, take a matatu (local minibus) or bus to Nyahururu. Once in Nyahururu, you can hire a taxi or boda-boda (motorcycle taxi) to Thomson Falls, which is located a short distance from the town center. Alternatively, many tour operators offer day trips to Thomson Falls from Nakuru or Nairobi.
