The mountain formed from volcanic activity, and its name, "Longonot," comes from the Maasai word "Oloonong'ot," meaning "mountain of many spurs" or "steep ridges." While there isn't a rich cultural history tied directly to the mountain itself, the surrounding area is steeped in Maasai traditions and history. The Maasai people have long inhabited the region and continue to graze their livestock in the area. The primary activity at Mount Longonot is hiking to the crater rim. The hike is moderately challenging, taking approximately 3-4 hours to complete the ascent and descent. Once at the rim, you can walk around the entire crater, offering spectacular views in all directions. Wildlife such as zebras, giraffes, and various bird species can be spotted within the park. Remember to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and wear appropriate hiking shoes.
Transportation
The most common way to reach Mount Longonot National Park is by private vehicle or taxi from Naivasha town. Matatus (local minibuses) travel from Naivasha to Longonot town, from where you can hire a motorbike taxi (boda-boda) to the park entrance. Be sure to negotiate the fare beforehand.
