Kazuri Beads Women's Cooperative Guide
Kazuri Beads: Empowering Women Through Art Guide
Discover the beauty and purpose behind Kazuri Beads Women's Cooperative, a remarkable organization in Nairobi that empowers disadvantaged women through the creation of exquisite handmade ceramic beads and pottery. More than just a shopping destination, Kazuri Beads offers a glimpse into a story of hope, resilience, and economic empowerment. Witness the artistry and dedication of the women as they transform clay into stunning works of art. Kazuri, meaning "small and beautiful" in Swahili, was founded in 1975 by Lady Susan Wood, initially as a small workshop to provide employment for single mothers. Over the years, it has grown into a thriving cooperative that employs hundreds of women, providing them with fair wages, healthcare, and education for their children. The cooperative uses locally sourced clay and natural pigments to create its unique and vibrant designs. A visit to Kazuri Beads offers a variety of activities. You can take a tour of the workshop to see the entire bead-making process, from the initial shaping of the clay to the final glazing and firing. Browse the extensive collection of necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and pottery in the showroom, and purchase unique souvenirs knowing that your purchase directly supports the women and their families. You can also enjoy a cup of Kenyan coffee at the on-site cafe.
