Giraffe Centre Guide

Get Up Close and Personal with Gentle Giants at the Giraffe Centre Guide

The Giraffe Centre in Nairobi is a must-visit for animal lovers and families. This sanctuary offers a unique opportunity to interact with endangered Rothschild's giraffes. Imagine hand-feeding these majestic creatures from a raised platform, getting a giraffe kiss, and learning about their conservation. It's an unforgettable experience that combines fun with education. The Giraffe Centre was established in 1979 by Jock Leslie-Melville, whose wife Betty captured a baby giraffe whose habitat was being destroyed. They raised the giraffe, named Daisy, in their home and later established the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW) to help protect giraffes. The centre has since played a crucial role in the conservation of the Rothschild's giraffe, which was once on the brink of extinction. Visitors can participate in giraffe feeding sessions, learn about giraffe biology and conservation efforts through informative talks and displays, and take a nature walk through the surrounding sanctuary. The centre also has a tea house and gift shop where you can relax and purchase souvenirs. It's a perfect way to spend a few hours and contribute to the preservation of these magnificent animals.

The Giraffe Centre is located in Lang'ata, about 20 kilometers from Nairobi's city center. You can reach it by taxi, Uber, or Bolt. Public transportation (matatus) are also available, but can be crowded and less direct. Look for matatus heading towards Lang'ata and ask to be dropped off near the Giraffe Centre junction.
