Monastery (Ad Deir) Guide

Ad Deir: Conquer Petra's Majestic Monastery Guide

Prepare for an unforgettable trek to Ad Deir, or "The Monastery," Petra's largest monument and a truly awe-inspiring sight. While the Treasury often steals the spotlight, the Monastery offers a more secluded and rewarding experience, requiring a challenging but ultimately fulfilling climb. Carved high into the mountainside, this colossal structure stands as a testament to Nabataean artistry and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Like the Treasury, the Monastery was likely carved in the 1st century AD, during the reign of King Rabel II. Its original purpose is debated, but it's believed to have served as a Nabataean temple or meeting place. The name "Monastery" comes from the crosses carved into the interior walls during the Byzantine period when it was used as a church. The Monastery's remote location and impressive scale make it a powerful symbol of Nabataean ingenuity and their ability to create monumental structures in challenging environments. The journey to the Monastery is an adventure in itself, involving a climb of approximately 800 steps. Take your time, stay hydrated, and enjoy the stunning scenery along the way. Once you reach the top, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views and the sheer scale of the Monastery. Relax at one of the Bedouin stalls offering refreshments and souvenirs, and soak in the atmosphere. Consider visiting in the late afternoon for stunning sunset views. For the adventurous, explore the surrounding trails for even more panoramic vistas.
