The Siq: Petra's Dramatic Gateway Guide
The Siq, meaning "shaft" in Arabic, is the main entrance to the ancient Nabataean city of Petra. This narrow gorge, a natural geological formation dramatically sculpted by time and tectonic forces, stretches for over a kilometer, winding its way through towering sandstone cliffs. Walking through the Siq is an unforgettable experience, a journey into the heart of Petra that builds anticipation with every twist and turn. The Siq's history is intertwined with the Nabataean civilization, who expertly engineered the gorge to serve as both a defensive barrier and a vital water conduit. They constructed dams, channels, and ceramic pipes to control the flow of water, preventing flash floods and providing a reliable water supply to the city. Evidence of these ingenious water management systems can still be seen along the Siq's walls. The Nabataeans also adorned the Siq with religious symbols and carvings, further enhancing its significance. Visitors can experience the Siq on foot, by horse-drawn carriage, or on horseback. Transportation
The Siq is accessed from the Petra Visitor Center. From the Visitor Center, it's a walk of about 15-20 minutes to the entrance of the Siq. Horse-drawn carriages are available from the Visitor Center to the Siq entrance for a fee.
