Monastery (Ad Deir) Guide
Reach New Heights: Discover the Majestic Monastery of Petra Guide
The Monastery, or Ad Deir, is one of Petra's largest and most impressive monuments, rivaling even the Treasury in grandeur. Carved into the sandstone cliffs, this massive structure stands as a testament to the Nabataean skill and artistry. While the climb to reach it is challenging, the breathtaking views and the sheer scale of the Monastery make it an unforgettable experience. The Monastery was likely built in the 3rd century BC as a Nabataean tomb, later used as a Christian church, hence its name. The facade is remarkably well-preserved, featuring intricate carvings and architectural details. Unlike the Treasury, which is located at the end of a narrow siq, the Monastery sits atop a mountain, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The main activity is the hike up the 800+ steps to reach the Monastery. It's a strenuous climb, so wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water. Once at the top, you can explore the Monastery's interior, admire the facade, and enjoy the stunning views. Several small cafes and souvenir shops are located near the Monastery, offering refreshments and a place to rest. While in Petra, try Bedouin tea and traditional Jordanian dishes available at restaurants within the site.
Transportation
The Monastery is only accessible by foot. You must first enter Petra through the main entrance and walk through the Siq. From the end of the Siq, follow the signs to the Monastery trail, which involves a significant uphill climb.
