Unkai Terrace Guide
Witness a Sea of Clouds: Unkai Terrace at Tomamu Guide
The Unkai Terrace, located at Hoshino Resorts Tomamu, offers a truly magical experience: the chance to witness a breathtaking "sea of clouds" (Unkai in Japanese) stretching out before you. Perched high on a mountain peak, this observation deck provides unparalleled views of the surrounding landscape, transformed into a surreal ocean of mist under the right weather conditions. It's a must-see destination for nature lovers and photographers seeking an unforgettable spectacle. The Unkai Terrace is a relatively recent addition to the Tomamu area, designed to capitalize on the unique weather patterns that create the Unkai phenomenon. The resort has invested in infrastructure and observation facilities to make this natural wonder accessible to visitors. While not a historical site, the terrace has quickly become an iconic symbol of the Tomamu region, attracting tourists from around the world. The primary activity at the Unkai Terrace is, of course, witnessing the sea of clouds. However, the terrace also offers other attractions, including a cafe where you can enjoy a warm drink while taking in the view, and various observation points designed to enhance the experience. In the summer months, hiking trails around the terrace provide opportunities to explore the surrounding mountain scenery. The Unkai Terrace is accessible by gondola from the base of the mountain.
Transportation
To reach the Unkai Terrace, you must first get to Hoshino Resorts Tomamu. From there, take the Unkai Gondola, which departs from the resort base. The gondola ride takes approximately 13 minutes to reach the terrace. The resort is accessible via JR Tomamu Station, with a complimentary shuttle bus service to the resort. If driving, follow signs to Hoshino Resorts Tomamu and park at the base of the gondola.
