Walk Among Yokai: A Spooky Stroll Down Mizuki Shigeru Road Guide
Step into a world of Japanese folklore and the supernatural on Mizuki Shigeru Road in Sakaiminato! This whimsical street is dedicated to the beloved manga artist Mizuki Shigeru, creator of the iconic *GeGeGe no Kitaro*, a series about a young yokai (supernatural creature) boy. Even if you're not familiar with the manga, the sheer creativity and playful atmosphere of the road will captivate you. Prepare to be greeted by over 170 bronze statues of Kitaro and his yokai friends, lining the street and inviting you to explore their quirky world. Mizuki Shigeru Road wasn't always a haven for yokai. Before its transformation, it was a relatively ordinary street. However, in 1993, Sakaiminato City decided to revitalize the area by celebrating its most famous son, Mizuki Shigeru. The initial installation of statues proved incredibly popular, drawing tourists and breathing new life into the town. Over the years, the road has expanded and evolved, adding more statues, shops, and attractions, solidifying its status as a unique and unforgettable destination. The road is a testament to the power of art and culture to transform a place and create a truly special experience. Beyond simply admiring the statues, Mizuki Shigeru Road offers a variety of activities. You can visit the Mizuki Shigeru Museum to delve deeper into the artist's life and work. Browse the many shops selling yokai-themed souvenirs, from Kitaro plushies to yokai-shaped snacks. Sample local delicacies like *oden* (a Japanese hot pot dish) and seafood, as Sakaiminato is a major fishing port. Keep an eye out for special events and festivals that take place throughout the year, adding even more excitement to your visit. Don't forget to take plenty of photos with your favorite yokai!
