Shurijo Castle Guide

Shurijo Castle: A Majestic Symbol of Ryukyu History Guide

Shurijo Castle is a magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Perched atop a hill overlooking Naha, Okinawa, this castle offers stunning views and a fascinating glimpse into the island's rich history and culture. It's a must-see for anyone visiting Okinawa. Shurijo Castle served as the royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom for over 450 years, from the 15th century until the kingdom was annexed by Japan in 1879. The castle's architecture blends Chinese and Japanese influences, reflecting the kingdom's close ties with both countries. It was the center of Ryukyuan politics, diplomacy, and culture. Sadly, the castle has been destroyed and rebuilt several times throughout its history, most recently after a devastating fire in 2019. Reconstruction efforts are currently underway. Despite the ongoing reconstruction, visitors can still explore the castle grounds, learn about its history at the visitor center, and admire the reconstructed sections. Key attractions include the Shureimon Gate, a symbol of Okinawan culture, and the Kankaimon Gate, the main entrance to the castle. While the main hall is currently under reconstruction, there are still plenty of areas to explore and appreciate the castle's grandeur. While not directly within the castle, the surrounding area offers opportunities to sample Okinawan cuisine, including dishes influenced by the royal court.
