Ryuzu Falls: A Dragon's Head Waterfall in Nikko's Natural Beauty Guide
Nestled within the stunning landscapes of Nikko National Park, Ryuzu Falls (竜頭の滝, Ryūzu no Taki) is a picturesque waterfall that captivates visitors with its unique shape and serene surroundings. The name "Ryuzu" translates to "Dragon's Head," a fitting description for the falls, which split into two streams as they cascade over a rocky outcrop, resembling the head of a dragon. This natural wonder is a must-see for anyone exploring the beauty of Nikko. Ryuzu Falls is formed by the Yukawa River flowing into Lake Chuzenji. The falls are relatively short, dropping only about 60 meters, but their width and the surrounding lush greenery create a breathtaking scene. The best time to visit is during the autumn foliage season (typically mid-October to early November) when the surrounding trees burst into vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow, creating a truly unforgettable spectacle. Visitors can enjoy several activities at Ryuzu Falls. A viewing platform provides excellent vantage points for admiring the falls and taking photos. A walking trail leads along the riverbank, allowing you to explore the surrounding forest and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. There's also a small teahouse near the falls where you can relax and enjoy a cup of matcha tea while taking in the scenery. While Nikko is known for its Yudofu (tofu simmered in hot water) and Yuba (tofu skin), you can find local snacks and refreshments at the teahouse near the falls.
Transportation
Ryuzu Falls is accessible by bus from Tobu Nikko Station or JR Nikko Station. Take the Tobu bus bound for Yumoto Onsen and get off at the 'Ryuzu no Taki' bus stop. The journey takes approximately 50-60 minutes. From the bus stop, it's a short walk to the viewing platform and the teahouse.
