Nara Deer Park Guide

Meet the Friendly Deer of Nara Park Guide

Nara Deer Park is a sprawling public park in Nara, Japan, famous for its thousands of freely roaming deer. These deer are considered sacred animals and are a symbol of the city. Visitors can interact with the deer, feed them special deer crackers (shika senbei) sold throughout the park, and enjoy the beautiful natural scenery. It's a unique and unforgettable experience for animal lovers and nature enthusiasts. The deer in Nara Park have a long and fascinating history. They are believed to be descendants of the deer that were considered sacred messengers of the Kasuga Shrine, one of Nara's most important religious sites. For centuries, the deer were protected and revered, and killing one was punishable by death. Today, the deer are still considered a national treasure and are carefully managed to ensure their well-being and the safety of visitors. Visitors to Nara Deer Park can enjoy a variety of activities. Purchase deer crackers and feed the deer, being mindful of their sometimes assertive behavior. Explore the park's many temples and shrines, including Todai-ji Temple, home to a giant bronze Buddha statue. Stroll through the beautiful gardens and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. The park is also a great place for a picnic or a leisurely bike ride. Nara is known for its *mochi*, a sweet rice cake. Be sure to try *kakinoha-zushi*, sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves, a local specialty.
