Former Oshima Residence Guide
Step Back in Time: A Glimpse into Samurai Life at the Former Oshima Residence Guide
Welcome to the Former Oshima Residence, a beautifully preserved samurai house in Matsumae, offering a fascinating peek into the lives of a mid-ranking samurai family during the Edo period. Imagine strolling through the meticulously maintained rooms, picturing the daily routines and social interactions that once unfolded within these walls. This isn't just a museum; it's a portal to a bygone era, where you can truly connect with Japan's rich samurai heritage. The Oshima family served the Matsumae clan, who ruled the region of Hokkaido (then known as Ezo) from Matsumae Castle. This residence, dating back to the late Edo period (1603-1868), provides valuable insight into the architectural style and lifestyle of samurai families of that social standing. Unlike grand castles or opulent estates, the Oshima Residence offers a more intimate and relatable glimpse into the everyday lives of those who served the feudal lords. The house showcases the practical design and functional spaces that were essential for a samurai family's survival and social standing. Visitors can explore the various rooms of the residence, including the living quarters, kitchen, and storage areas. The well-preserved tatami mats, sliding doors (fusuma), and traditional furnishings offer a tangible connection to the past. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition directly tied to the Oshima Residence itself, exploring the local restaurants in Matsumae will give you a taste of Hokkaido's unique seafood and regional specialties, reflecting the culinary landscape that would have influenced the Oshima family's diet.
