Amanohashidate: Bridge to Heaven Guide
Amanohashidate, one of Japan's Three Most Scenic Views, is a pine-covered sandbar spanning Miyazu Bay in Kyoto Prefecture. This natural wonder, resembling a bridge to heaven when viewed from the surrounding hills, offers breathtaking panoramic views and a unique cultural experience. The sandbar is approximately 3.6 kilometers long and covered with thousands of pine trees, creating a picturesque landscape that changes with the seasons. Amanohashidate's formation began thousands of years ago due to the accumulation of sand and sediment carried by the tides and currents of Miyazu Bay. Over time, the natural forces sculpted the sandbar into its present form. The area has been revered for centuries, appearing in ancient poems and artwork. Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples dot the surrounding hills, adding to the spiritual significance of the location. The "Matsushima Kaihin Prefectural Park" is also nearby, offering a beautiful coastal experience. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities at Amanohashidate. Rent a bicycle and cycle along the sandbar, taking in the stunning views and enjoying the refreshing sea breeze. Climb to one of the viewpoints, such as Kasamatsu Park or Nariaiji Temple, and perform the traditional "matanozoki" pose – bending over and looking at the sandbar upside down through your legs, which enhances the illusion of a bridge to heaven. You can also take a boat tour around the bay for a different perspective. The area is known for its fresh seafood, so be sure to try local delicacies like grilled seafood and seafood rice bowls at the restaurants near the bay.
Transportation
From Kyoto Station, take the JR Limited Express Hashidate to Amanohashidate Station (approx. 2 hours). From Amanohashidate Station, the sandbar is a short walk away. Buses also operate from the station to various points around the bay, including Kasamatsu Park.
