It's a truly unforgettable way to connect with the spiritual essence of Koyasan. Founded over 1000 years ago, Eko-in Temple has a long and fascinating history. It is particularly known for its association with the Okunoin Cemetery, the largest cemetery in Japan and the final resting place of countless individuals, including prominent historical figures. Eko-in plays a vital role in maintaining the cemetery and conducting memorial services for the deceased. The temple's name, "Eko-in," translates to "Temple of Echoing Merit," reflecting its dedication to accumulating merit for the benefit of all beings. At Eko-in, you can participate in a variety of activities that offer a deeper understanding of Shingon Buddhism. Witness the daily morning prayers, where monks chant sutras and offer incense. Observe the mesmerizing fire ceremony (Goma), where wooden sticks inscribed with prayers are burned to purify the mind and body.
