Danjo Garan: Koyasan's Sacred Heart Guide

Welcome to Danjo Garan, one of the two most sacred sites in Koyasan, alongside Okunoin Cemetery. This expansive temple complex is the birthplace of Shingon Buddhism, founded by Kobo Daishi (Kukai) over 1200 years ago. Immerse yourself in the spiritual heart of Koyasan, where ancient structures and serene gardens create an atmosphere of profound peace and contemplation. Danjo Garan's history is deeply intertwined with Kobo Daishi's vision. In 816, he began constructing this complex as the central training ground for Shingon Buddhism. Over centuries, it has been rebuilt and expanded, weathering fires and natural disasters. Key structures include the Kondo Hall (main hall), the Konpon Daito Pagoda (a massive two-storied pagoda), and the Miedo Hall (founder's hall). Each building holds significant religious and artistic value, reflecting the evolution of Shingon Buddhist art and architecture. Visitors can explore the vast grounds, admiring the intricate details of the Kondo Hall and the vibrant colors of the Konpon Daito Pagoda. Participate in a guided meditation session, copy sutras (Shakyo), or simply wander through the serene gardens, absorbing the tranquil atmosphere. Don't miss the Reihokan Museum, which houses a remarkable collection of Buddhist art and artifacts from Koyasan's temples. While in Koyasan, be sure to try *shojin ryori*, the traditional vegetarian cuisine of Buddhist monks, often served at local restaurants and temple lodgings (shukubo).
